Margaret Thatcher was dedicated to destroying the power of organised labour and the trade unions, after they had brought down the Conservative government in 1974. The nationalised industries were swiftly privatised, and severe constraints were placed on strikes and strikers. 'They all got it after us. The Tory government decided – because the nationalised industries were near enough 100% unionised [and] they fought for their workers ... decent terms and conditions – that they had to take that out.’ Nicky Wilson, the President of the National Union of Mineworkers, reflecting on the aftermath of the miners’ strike of 1984–85.
