About this artwork
Rogovin first began photographing miners in Appalachia in the United States of America in 1962. By the early 1980s he was already thinking about a project to document miners all over the world. He started with his trip to Scotland, eventually widening his scope to ten countries across four continents. He called his global project The Family of Miners. These men worked at Monktonhall Colliery, Midlothian; Rogovin photographed the man second from the right at home, as seen in this portrait of the same series.
