About this artwork
Nick Marden is the son of the artist Brice Marden, who Mapplethorpe also photographed, and Pauline Baez (sister of Joan). He was a bass guitarist with the rock band ‘The Stimulators’. Mapplethorpe chose to photograph him from behind so as to capture his hard-rock image of black leather jacket covered with Hell’s Angel-type words.
