About this artwork
In common with a number of his contemporaries, who gathered regularly at the Institute for Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, Turnbull had a particular interest in the human head. In 1953 the ICA organized a show called 'Wonder and Horror of the Human Head'. One of the things that interested Turnbull was how immediately recognizable the human head was, even when the image was far removed from reality.
