About this artwork
This lithograph was created while Barns-Graham was travelling in Spain in 1958. She was inspired by the vibrant earthy colours and bold designs encountered there. It also shows the influence of American Abstract Expressionism where the mark of the brushstroke itself is a central element of the picture. Like many artists who engage in printmaking as part of their wider practice, Barns-Graham relied on the expertise of master printmakers. Her close working relationships with various printmakers in the UK meant that she could achieve the wide-range of tones, textures and effects that techniques, such as lithography, offer.
