About this artwork

This bust is a version of Canova’s Self-Portrait placed by his tomb in the enormous Pantheon-like Tempio, which he had constructed at his own expense on the hill above his native village of Possagno in the Veneto. The copy is considerably smaller than the original bust and is therefore likely to be an accurate freehand copy, rather than a measured replica based on the pointed model or a cast of the marble.
