Lacuna
About this artwork
Toby Paterson has a keen interest in post-war modernist architecture which he uses as a language to explore the boundaries between realism and abstraction. He deconstructs architectural forms in his work to create pieces which are sometimes understandable as built constructions, while others are purely abstract. This work on paper is one of his more abstract works, in which three-dimensional forms hover over an expansive white ground. Paterson is particularly drawn to architectural sites which are overlooked or neglected and the title of this work ‘Lacuna’ is the Latin translation for a gap or an unfilled space, suggesting a reference to an abandoned wasteland.
