About this artwork

Steven Campbell made numerous paintings like this one in the 1980s in which solidly built figures are set in fantastical, imaginary landscapes. In keeping with the postmodern mood of the times, where knowledge was seen as dependant on historical circumstances and hence changeable, his paintings from the 1980s depicts a world which makes no rational sense. His paintings like this one have a surreal quality similar to the work of Rene Magritte. Here a female figure takes a powerful stance with one arm outstretched. The stiffness of her clothing resembles armour whilst shackling chains hang from both her wrists suggesting imprisonment or martyrdom.
