About this artwork

The types of boat in the centre of this painting were commonly bought by the Scots from Dutch suppliers and used in the trade to the Netherlands. Van de Cappelle, who inherited his father's thriving dye business in Amsterdam, was an amateur artist and possibly self-taught. He painted few pictures but is now considered one of the most outstanding Dutch marine painters. He had a huge art collection, including works by Rembrandt and Elsheimer.
