Van de Cappelle, who inherited his father's thriving dye business in Amsterdam, was an amateur artist and possibly self-taught. He painted few pictures but is now considered one of the most outstanding Dutch marine painters. He had a huge art collection, including works by Rembrandt and Elsheimer.
