Sickert sketched and painted many scenes in the Normandy village of Envermeu between 1919 and 1920. This vivid landscape shows the surrounding countryside. The rich yellows and greens are broken up by the subtle line of a pathway leading the eye into the scene. This painting dates from 1924 or later – in 1924 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy, and he began adding ARA to his signature thereafter. Around this time he also began signing his name with the initial R, for Richard, rather than W for Walter Sickert.
