About this artwork

Pissarro depicted the port of Rouen many times, attracted by the contrast between the historic old town and the modern working harbour. In this technically innovative etching he conveys the atmospheric effects of the busy, smoke-filled port by smoothing or ‘burnishing’ the etched marks. This print is one of over 400 works of art on paper bequeathed by the Scottish lawyer Kenneth Sanderson (1868 – 1944). Sanderson was a respected art historian and Trustee of the National Galleries of Scotland, as well as a lawn tennis champion.
