Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Seaforth, 1744 - 1781, at home in Naples: concert party

About this artwork

A private concert is taking place in the Neapolitan apartment of the expatriate, Lord Fortrose. The figures playing the violin are believed to be, on the left, Sir William Hamilton, and to the right, the Neapolitan composer and violinist Emanuele Barbella. The informal dress of the harpsichord player suggests that he may be Lord Fortrose himself while the figure immediately to his right playing the small spinet may represent his keyboard teacher Vincenzo Orgitano. In the left-hand corner, the artist has painted himself, working on this picture.
