About this artwork

This painting shows the Edinburgh studio of Charles Martin Hardie. Standing on the left, Hardie is showing one of his paintings to a group of his fellow artists. To the right of Hardie stands Alexander Anderson, with his pipe in hand. Robert Noble is seated at the front of the scene, with George Whitton Johnstone leaning over his shoulder and John Simpson Fraser standing by. The sculptor, Thomas Burnett, is by the fireplace. When the picture was shown at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1883, the public were delighted with this glimpse of Bohemian life.
