This is a key image in Paolozzi’s work, one that he returned to throughout his career. He made the original collage on which this 1962 screenprint was based, in 1954. He made some earlier collage works where modern machines are juxtaposed with ancient Greek sculpture. Here he takes the fusion of human and machine even further – this human head has an engine for a brain and a crankshaft for a spine. Paolozzi made the screenprint with Chris Prater (1924–1996) of Kelpra Studio in London.
