About this artwork

In 1961 Redpath travelled to Lisbon. Inspired by the church of Saint Roque she turned her attention increasingly towards painting church interiors. This painting was inspired by a visit the artist made to Venice’s cathedral, St Mark’s Basilica, in 1963. In contrast to the warm, earthy tones she used to depict Portuguese church interiors, Redpath’s Venetian palette was dominated by cool tones of blue, grey and black.
