About this artwork

By the 1860s Dunnottar Castle was a favourite subject with Scottish painters and photographers. This ruined fortress, which is spectacularly situated on the north-east coast of Scotland near Stonehaven, has many historical associations. Latterly the seat of the Earls Marischal, it was dismantled after the 1715 Jacobite Rising. A prolific landscapist in oils and in watercolours, Paton was the younger brother of the figure painter Sir Joseph Noel Paton and the sculptor Amelia Robertson Paton, who was later married to the painter and photographer D.O. Hill.
