‘The Sand, Wind and Tide Series’ is one work comprised of fourteen separate studies of the same square of beach at Camber Sands, near Rye in Sussex. They were made at twelve-hourly intervals, after each tide, over a week-long period in November 1969. Each cast registers the different sand patterns created by the rising and retreating sea. Mark Boyle stated that the family’s works should have as little to do with choice as possible: the patterns were created by the rising and retreating tide, which is pulled by the moon; the format is pre-determined; and the style is as faithful and exact as it is possible to be. All the pieces were made at a beach-front café, which was closed during the winter months.
