Self-Portraits 1990 - 1998

About this artwork

Lucas has been making self-portraits since 1990 and they are now one of the main themes in her work. In this photograph, as in all her self-portraits, Lucas looks confident and in control, staring straight into the camera. The two fried eggs on her chest are a crude parody of the female body. The artist has used a similar tactic in the objects she makes, representing body parts using everyday objects in a vulgar but also humorous manner, adopting and re-contextualising 'laddish' slang and innuendos.
