About this artwork
In 2000 a number of Scottish institutions including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery commissioned six photographers to create portraits of poets of non-Scottish origin living in Scotland. David Williams photographed his subjects with a large camera which 'lends the portrait session a real sense of event'. He made a companion piece for each of the portraits with snapshots of objects from the poets' homes to 'provide a more comprehensive insight into the poets and their lives'. Irfan Merchant is a Sufi poet resident in Edinburgh.
