About this artwork

Lear lived and worked on Corfu for long periods between 1855 and 1864. Kinopiástes is on a hill to the south of Corfu town, an easy walk from Lear’s apartment. Two versions of this view are in the Scottish National Gallery collection, both drawn on 1 April 1863. Lear’s diary for that day records: ‘Set off by 6.30 with George to Kinopiástes – very warm. Drew there till it clouded, and rained hard – a storm…’. The detailed depiction of the foliage and broad washes of colour for the distant woods and hills are typical of Lear’s deft and atmospheric style.
