About this artwork

The exaggerated muscles of St Jerome are characteristic of Faccini's figures. The saint is depicted in the desert gazing at a small crucifix tied to a tree. He may be holding a stone in one hand which he used to beat his chest. His other hand curls around a skull, a potent reminder of death. This etching is one of only four prints of the subject made by Faccini. The others are more detailed and thus may suggest that this print was the artist's proof impression after which he worked up the detail on the plate.
