Dramatic highland scenery and rugged coastal landscape was well suited to Milne's graphic ability and gave fresh impetus to his art. His paintings of the coast at Morar, the Lairig Ghru and the more northerly Sutherland landscape have a muscular grandeur and lean mood quite different from the intimacy and colourist tendency of his St Tropez scenes. Milne spent a great deal of time in Paris and the South of France, where he was inspired by the work of Cézanne and Matisse. The influence of Cézanne is especially evident in this landscape, with the earthly tones and the broad, flat brushstrokes.
