About this artwork
Glasgow-born Clare Grogan shot to fame in 1981 after the director, Bill Forsyth, spotted her working as a waitress and cast her in the film ‘Gregory’s Girl’. Since then Grogan has appeared in numerous TV shows including ‘Comfort and Joy’, ‘Red Dwarf’, ‘Eastenders’ and ‘Skins’. During the early 1980s Grogan was also known as the lead singer of the band, Altered Images. The band scored several hits but split in 1983. More recently she has written a children’s book and occasionally covers for presenters on BBC 6 Music. This portrait shows Grogan pulling her jumper up over her face – shortly before she started filming ‘Gregory’s Girl’ she suffered a facial injury during an assault in a Glasgow bar, which left her with a scar on her left cheek.
