Broken English August '91
About this artwork
This print is an extension of a work Gallaccio made for an exhibition in 1991 which consisted of a shallow tray of water, with photo-booth photographs floating on the surface. The pictures were of artists, curators, gallery staff and critics. Gallaccio explained: ‘Once I put the photographs in the water they started to form narratives, who floated next to who, who sank etc. Some of the images survived the experience, others totally washed away.’ The work is a metaphor for the transient and fickle nature of the art world. This work is from a portfolio of prints by eleven different London-based artists, called Screen. The title is taken from the screenprint technique but also refers to the fact that most of the artists had worked with film or photography.
