About this artwork

Francis Hawley, 2nd Baron Hawley was an English landowner and politician, whose social position was founded on his family’s extensive estates in Berkshire, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. In 1697 he married Lady Elizabeth Ramsay, sister of the 5th Earl of Dalhousie, a wealthy Scottish landowner. Their marriage reflects the increasingly close relations between the English and Scottish elites in the years leading up to the Act of Union of 1707.
