About this artwork

This drawing illustrates a line which features in Robert Burns’s famous song ‘Auld Lang Syne’ (1788). As young boys, Burns and his brother Gilbert spent their spare time playing games and exploring the Ayrshire countryside. These idyllic childhood pursuits are recalled in these lines from the song; “We twa hae run about the braes, / And pou'd the gowan fine; / We twa hae paidl'd in the burn, / Frae morning sun till dine”.
