About this artwork

In this study Ramsay has shown himself seated in a chair holding his palette and brushes. Pictured at the age of 42, Ramsay was by this time a well-established artist; his expression is nonchalant and self-assured. This drawing possibly relates to a painted self-portrait made in Rome in 1756. In the painting, Ramsay points towards an easel on which there is a portrait of his second wife, Margaret Lindsay.
