About this artwork
Heriot’s hospital exists today as ‘George Heriot’s School’ and is located in the south side of Edinburgh. It was founded in 1628 with an endowment left by the goldsmith George Heriot to provide ‘fatherless bairns’ (children) in the city of Edinburgh with an education. To this day Heriot’s charitable vision endures with the independent school providing bursaries for children of widows and widowers. In 2016 they offered bursaries to Syrian refugee children to attend the school. This early engraving shows how the school looked in the 17th century.
