About this artwork

This image is taken from Colin Caver's commission to photograph the last working deep coal mine in Scotland at Longannet. Unable for security reasons to use his own equipment in the mine, Cavers overcame numerous technical difficulties to produce his pictures. The coal industry has had a central role in Scotland's economic history. Because of the recent closure of most British mines, Caver's photographs acquire a special significance as historical documents, a visual record to keep the collective memory alive.
