About this artwork
This piece was partly inspired by a long road trip which Opie took across Europe in 1993. He took photographs along the way, which were then used as the basis for paintings. Opie reduced the amount of detail and used colours similar to those in computer racing games. This work is from a series of four, made from coloured vinyl by a commercial sign-making company. They are based on vector drawings made by a computer programme. Looking at the finished work, viewers are encouraged mentally and physically to enter the picture, and to imagine themselves on an endless journey.
