About this artwork

The coach seen here operated between Musselburgh and Levenhall at the turn of the twentieth century. The North British Railway trains running from Waverley to North Berwick, Penicuick, Dalkeith, Peebles and Musselburgh, simultaneously served the residential areas of Edinburgh. The track did not extend to smaller neighbourhoods like Levenhall and the railway company laid on a horse-drawn coach which carried the locals to and from the Musselburgh station. Some of the passengers in this picture are going to continue their journey by train while others are definitely out for a day on Musselburgh Links, 'the world's oldest golf course'.
