About this artwork
This landscape was painted just beyond the garden of the artist's house at Broomieknowe, Lasswade. As with many of his late works it is not completely finished, but due to the artist's habit of working, from the outset, over the whole canvas, to evoke the whole space and atmosphere of his subject, this relative incompleteness is of little importance. Most late McTaggarts depend on the underlying canvas remaining visible throughout the picture, and are concerned with the establishment of an intensely felt poetic mood. As is usual in the artist's landscapes, the figures of the children can be discerned here and there in the foreground.
