About this artwork
Wilson took great pleasure from both photography and travel. Between 1904 and 1927, excluding the years of World War I, he devoted several months each year to these passions. Around 1936 he intended to travel to China via the Trans-Siberian railway but his plans fell through due to remaining tensions after the War. Instead he was invited by the Maharajah of Alwar to visit India. This photograph is of Udaipur, a city in the state of Rajasthan in north-west India. It differs dramatically from the photographs he took in Edwardian Britain of garden parties and games of golf. The light seems hot and humid and the figures are simply black silhouettes against grey, elaborately decorated buildings.
