About this artwork

This is a replica, made by Wilkie for his brother, of an earlier portrait of their parents which he had painted for his sister Helen in 1807. The Revd David Wilkie (1738-1812) Minister of Cults, Fife, and his wife Isabella Lister (died 1824) are shown with a bible and a pair of communion cups. The chair was one that the artist himself owned. It can also be seen in the Letter of Introduction in the Gallery’s collection. David Wilkie was 21 when he completed the original and kept it with him until his death. The original version of the painting currently resides in the Louvre.
