Mrs Winifred ('Winnie') Margaret Ewing, 1929 – 2023. Politician: Member of the European and Scottish Parliaments
About this artwork
In this portrait, Ewing is wearing the same striking red dress she wore for the opening of the new Scottish Parliament in 1999. She presided at the first session, saying: 'The Scottish Parliament, which adjourned on 25 March 1707, is hereby reconvened'. As an able MP in the 1970s, she earned the Scottish National Party a respectable place in political life. Before becoming a Member of the Scottish Parliament, Ewing was a member of the European Parliament where, for her strong views, she became known as Madame Ecosse.
