About this artwork
Saint Catherine of Siena, wearing a Dominican habit and holding a lily, receives the crown of thorns from the Christ Child, while Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music, plays her portable organ nearby. Vanni was the leading artist in his native Siena around 1600, and also worked in Rome. The high-keyed palette and soft-focus brushwork in this little painting reflect his admiration for the work of Federico Barocci (about 1533 – 1612).
