San Francisco
About this artwork
This large photograph of a San Francisco hotel is over two metres tall. There is no central point of focus and the picture is full of detail, meaning that the viewer is bombarded by a dizzying array of shapes, patterns and perspectives. However, there are no random elements in the picture, as Gursky is meticulous in planning his viewpoint and composition. The few people that are in the photograph are dwarfed by the building, to the extent that three figures in the hotel lobby even look as if they are enclosed inside the abstract sculpture.
