About this artwork

In 1835 Scott presented a huge altarpiece to the new Catholic chapel of St Patrick in Lothian Street, Edinburgh, in gratitude for support received during his recent study tour to Italy. This was his most impressive public commission. Presentation prints were commissioned by the Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts for distribution to its members. This small oil copy, based on the print, was owned by Lord Meadowbank, Vice-President of the Royal Institution.
