About this artwork

This is a compositional study for the panoramic view of Rome which was painted in 1856 and is also in the collection of the National. The striking light effects with the contrast between warm rose and deep grey shadow was painted by the artist on the spot. The city is viewed from the elevated terrace of the Sant'Onofrio convent on the Janiculum. The large finished painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1855, and was hailed by Prince Albert as 'the most magnificent work of art of modern times'.
