About this artwork

The fourth son of Sir John Inglis of Cramond, a patron of Allan Ramsay, Inglis was a successful and cultured Edinburgh merchant. In the 1780s Robert Adam designed his mansion south of Edinburgh. About this time Patrick’s brother Admiral Charles sat to Raeburn for a portrait now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Patrick’s own portrait, with its strikingly fluid handling, is the earlier of his two Raeburn commissions. The second, in Minneapolis, dates from around 1799 when Inglis inherited the baronetcy.
