About this artwork

The flagelation g of Christ takes place on a raised platform decorated with low reliefs, while in the lower corners the two saints contemplate the gruesome scene. Saint Jerome, accompanied by his lion, grips the stone with which he beat his breast in penitence. The thorny branches silhouetted against Saint Benedict allude to the legend that as a young man he rolled naked in a bed of thorns to rid himself of lascivious thoughts.
