About this artwork
In 1998, MUF, a group of architects based in Clerkenwell, London, commissioned several artists and film-makers to make works in the area, including David Shrigley. The artist asked a friend to make a map of the vicinity, showing where cigarette butts could be found lying around, for example thrown away by office workers after a cigarette break. Each day, Shrigley’s friend would deliberately place an oversized cigarette butt amongst the others which had been discarded. This series of interventions were documented with photographs taken by Shrigley, including this one. Shrigley studied Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art and has since maintained an interest in working outside the traditional gallery setting with subtle and light-hearted interventions like this one.
