About this artwork
David Shrigley pokes fun at the unfinished quality of his own artworks in this drawing on paper. Handwriting plays an important role in his work – its raw and uneven style is instantly recognisable as his own. It is used with or without accompanying images to create a residual sense of anxiety lurking beneath the initial humour. Shrigley is best known for his caustic works on paper like this one which make crude and humorous observations on everyday life. His work hovers between illustration and fine art and he is part of a long line of satirical cartoonists from Edward Lear and James Thurber to Spike Milligan and Gary Larson. His awkward, improvised drawings and musings resemble schoolboy doodles and often contain scribbles, mistakes and corrections.
