Untitled (Not Funny)
About this artwork
David Shrigley explores the comic-book format in this image by dividing it into six separate panels. Each panel pushes the exploitative language of tabloid newspapers to the extreme, creating a series of increasingly ridiculous scenarios. The subtitle, ‘not funny’, suggests the topics shouldn’t be funny but really are, despite their disturbing or surreal content. Shrigley is best known for his caustic drawings like this one, which make crude and humorous observations on everyday life. His work hovers between illustration and fine art and he is part of a long line of satirical cartoonists from Edward Lear and James Thurber to Spike Milligan and Gary Larson. His awkward, improvised drawings and musings resemble schoolboy doodles and often contain scribbles, mistakes and corrections.
