About this artwork

Shrigley often makes reference to marginal or outsider characters in his satirical drawings – here he explores the theme of the wayward criminal who is following his own path. Shrigley is best known for his caustic drawings like this one which make crude and humorous observations on everyday life. His work hovers between illustration and fine art and he is part of a long line of satirical cartoonists from Edward Lear and James Thurber to Spike Milligan and Gary Larson. His awkward, improvised drawings and musings resemble schoolboy doodles and often contain scribbles, mistakes and corrections.
