Shrigley was raised in Macclesfield by evangelical Christian parents and has frequently made reference to his religious upbringing in his work. Many of his drawings are deliberately blasphemous like this one, which undercuts a well-known, clichéd phrase. Here Shrigley has drawn and written onto a photograph of a section of carpet with felt-tip pen, bringing a sense of the absurd into a banal, domestic image. The artist is best known for his caustic drawings like this one which make crude and humorous observations on everyday life. His work hovers between illustration and fine art and he is part of a long line of satirical cartoonists from Edward Lear and James Thurber to Spike Milligan and Gary Larson.
