About this artwork
Scottish artist David Shrigley is best known for his caustic drawings which make crude and humorous observations on everyday life. His work hovers between illustration and fine art and he is part of a long line of satirical cartoonists from Edward Lear and James Thurber to Spike Milligan and Gary Larson. Shrigley’s awkward, improvised drawings resemble schoolboy doodles and often contain scribbles, mistakes and corrections. This work is one of many exploring the awkwardness of social situations via an absurd trio of characters, one of whom is being dwarfed by two others. There is a narrative quality to this work which Shrigley has more recently explored in animated film, in which he uses music and dialogue to further explore his own unique brand of comedy.
