About this artwork

A single arrow lodged in his neck identifies the subject of this picture as Saint Sebastian, an early Christian martyr. It shares a common provenance with Furini’s Personification of Poetry, hanging nearby, but they are unlikely to have been conceived as a pair, since the subject of that picture is secular rather than religious.
