About this artwork
When the Queen Street Café opened at the Scottish National Portrait in January 1991, John Bellany painted this picture where it was displayed for a number of years. While most of the figures are imaginary, the features of Dr Duncan Thomson, Keeper of the Gallery between 1982 and 1997, are easily recognisable. Bellany included a self-portrait in the painting - he is the figure dressed in stripes on the top right.
