View of Montigny-sur-Loing
About this artwork
Montigny-sur-Loing lies to the south of Fontainebleau on the River Loing some 75 kilometers from Paris. This view is from across the river, looking towards the church as the sun is setting behind. In the late 1860s the Hague school painter Jacob Maris (1837-1899) also visited the village and painted scenes that show its appearance had hardly changed since Daubigny painted this scene. Daubigny was relatively faithful to the architecture of the church, but took some liberties with the appearance of the surrounding buildings.
